I am not really a comic book person. I watched a few Marvel movies, until they ran it into the ground. (Ugh - hire more writers to actually have a story, instead of the pointless graphics.) And once they had Superman fighting Batman - that’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard of, and I’m out on DC also.
But! the concept is fun. And I always enjoy these niche interests people have, and the assorted fandoms that are such a big part of people’s lives! (See: the Trek museum visit) Fandoms are fun!
My Google maps were acting up, so I ended up driving past it and having to U-turn around. And then, there it was! I was DEFINITELY not the only person there that day. When I pulled up, there was a small family and a couple. So the manager (he identified himself as Head Nerd) gave all of us a little overview lecture and chatted with us about the museum.
This was the “gift shop” area of the museum. I doubt you can tell which one it was, but as I was leaving, I bought the Batgirl magnet from that display rack on the left. Batgirl was a librarian!!! So, obviously she’s the coolest superhero!!!
I liked the display on the far left, with Richie Rich and the Archies! I wasn’t much of a comic person in my youth (or today), but I read some of those. And on top of the cabinet are Groot and Rocket, from Guardians of the Galaxy! I did enjoy those movies, and I even bought the first movie’s soundtrack because it was fun.
Sometimes, girls get to be heroes too! (I mean: in real life it’s all the time; but in comic form, not so much.) And I really liked the Marvel TV series about her: Agent Carter! Cancelled before its time.
And, obviously: the Hulk! This model was quite fancy, and nine feet tall! This model was on the red carpet at one of the Marvel movie premiers. I remember watching the Hulk tv show when I was a kid; my brother and I were into it!
And look at this! Archives in the museum!!! Aaaahhhh…my professional life mixing with the joys of fandom. I feel profoundly satisfied.
Although I have basically zero interest in the DC comics world (Superman fighting Batman? Really??? I’m still staggered by the stupidity of that idea), I was a fan of Wonder Woman in the Super Friends cartoons of my youth and I really liked the first movie!
And The Phantom! I remember reading these in the Sunday newspaper comics. I always kind of had the Phantom mixed up in my mind with the Shadow - who was significantly cooler. But still: I like the look back at the old comics that this museum brings. All sorts of cool things were here, all sorts of fandoms represented - it was amazing and fun and definitely worth a visit if you are in the area!
Today is a good day to enjoy your fandom! Whether it’s comics, or music, or TV, or movies, or books, or anything else. Today is a good day to enjoy it, and to have some fun.
